Gentle Spirit Karate Getting Started for Beginners at SafeSkills

group

Our beginner level class allows you to ease into the program at your own pace. You don't need any previous martial arts experience or be in "good shape" to start. You will progress at your own pace consistent with your ability and level of fitness.

We view our training as a health and self-defense practice for the mind and body - a means of building a strong spirit and an opportunity to learn important life skills. The only requirement is a willingness to learn and a desire to grow. Deciding whether or not to train in a martial art can sometimes be confusing. TV and movies often depict martial arts as violent ways to harm other people. It is true that martial arts includes self-defense training, but respect is the foundation of martial arts at SafeSkills®.

When can I start?
You can start right away! Call or email us to schedule your first class. Our classes meet year round and beginners can join anytime.

When are the classes?
Classes for beginners are Mondays through Thursdays 6:30-7:30. The intermediate class is also being taught at this time so you will have the opportunity to see the amazing skills you will learn in the future.

How often should I train?
Beginners train once or twice a week. More experienced students may attend more often. Let us know what your schedule will allow.

Do I have to be in shape to start?
No - come as you are!

Who teaches beginners?
Our most experienced SafeSkills® Black Belts teach beginners. That instructor will be assisted by other SafeSkills® instructors throughout your training.

What do I wear?
Students wear a special karate uniform called a gi. As a beginner, wear clothing that is loose and comfortable (please, no shorts). A uniform can be purchased from us for your continued training. We train barefoot so special foot wear is not needed.

What can I expect?
You will have individual instruction at a pace that works for your learning. We are light hearted but we teach with intention. First, we start with a circle to bow in - you will not need to know the bow for the first class - you can just watch how it is done. We then do slow yoga style stretches. While the intermediate group continues with Kihon (Karate Basics), you will be taught these basics separately by a skilled instructor. The beginner group is usually small in number which gives you the opportunity to learn at your own pace, ask questions and develop a strong foundation. Eventually, you will have gained the skills to join in with the larger group. Learning new techniques in small groups or one on one will always be a part of your training.

Will I be the only: teenager, older adult, woman, man, large person, small person, uncoordinated person... in the class?
We are a very diverse group. We have people of all ages, all sizes and all abilities. Everyone is welcome and everyone can learn!

What beginners have said about the SafeSkills® experience:
I was amazed at what I could learn because the teaching was so clear.

I found that the dojo (karate school) was a place that the world could not intrude.

I always feel better after I leave the dojo than when I came in - what a great stress reducer!

At first I was scared because I saw so much TV stuff. But I found the instructors to be very supportive and encouraging and it wasn't impossible to do like the TV stuff!

Even after a month of training. I think that karate has changed me. I feel more confident and find that my balance and flexibility have improved.
