Karate for Adults & Teens

Karate is a combination of stances, punches, kicks, and blocks that make up a very efficient and beautiful way of moving. The style of karate we teach is Shorin Ryu Kobayashi which is one of the major styles of Okinawan karate. In this art you will learn Kihon (Basics), Kata (Forms), and Kumite (Sparring).

We also teach Kobudo (Ancient Martial Ways), referring to the ancient weapons system of Okinawa. Use of traditional weapons such as the bo is taught. Weapons training is reserved for intermediate to advanced students.

Our Teaching Philosophy

We combine excellence in personalized teaching with a creative and practical curriculum, all in an atmosphere conducive to your learning and personal growth. We have classes for all levels of expertise. If you are new to martial arts you can visit our Karate Beginners FAQ page to see how easy it is to start karate training at SafeSkills®.

We view our training as a health and self-defense practice for the mind and body - a means of building a strong spirit and an opportunity to learn important life skills. Deciding whether or not to train in a martial art can sometimes be confusing. TV and movies often depict martial arts as violent ways to harm other people. It is true that martial arts includes self-defense training, but respect is the foundation of martial arts at SafeSkills®.

The Difference Between Karate and Self-defense Training

We like to think of martial arts as the parent to self-defense skills. Which training you pursue will depend on your goal. Some people want to gain basic self-defense skills immediately, while others want to gain more in-depth defense skills. Karate is the study of an ancient art form. Similar to dance or gymnastics training, you strive for perfection as you practice techniques repeatedly for years. Self-defense training is the reality of that art form: your goal is to prevent or escape an attack. These skills are simpler and need to be viable even if not done perfectly. Both types of programs offer many benefits.
